This is a really interesting question. It seems that wether Africa, South America nor the arabic world seemed to manage to survive as global (economic) players. One reason for the fall of the arabic and the african countries could be, that mankind found a different power source than oil. And these countries (especially Iran, Iraq, Saudiarabia in the near east and e.g. Nigeria in Africa) founded their wealth and influence in the world mainly on this "black gold". If no one is dependent on oil anymore, the basis of their power would be gone.

Another question: what is about India? Its already becoming one major global player nowadays and they are not dependent on one resource only...

About Mishima: also a miracle to me why it just should consist of japanese people. On a different webpage I found that the author associated Mishima mainly with china and only partially with japan. And what about the nations from the souteast-asian area like South Korea or Taiwan? A idea worth to consider...
